Bonaire is one of the easiest cruise stops in the Caribbean. Your ship ties up at a pier in the centre of Kralendijk, and the waterfront starts where the gangway ends. There is no tender, no shuttle and no long transfer. That leaves more of your day for the part that matters: the water, the reef and the island itself.
Most ships stay 8 to 12 hours. Check your own call in the Bonaire cruise ship schedule first, then plan backwards from your all-aboard time.
First, do the maths on your time
Take your hours in port and subtract an hour at each end: one to get off the ship and find your guide, one as a buffer before all-aboard. A 10-hour call gives you roughly 8 usable hours. That is enough for one half-day tour and a relaxed lunch, or two short activities. It is not enough for everything, so choose.
Ship time or island time? Bonaire stays on Atlantic Standard Time all year. Some ships keep their own clock. Ask on board which time your all-aboard refers to, and set your phone accordingly.
If you came for the reef: Klein Bonaire
The uninhabited island you can see from the pier is the best reason to get in the water. The reef around Klein Bonaire is part of the Bonaire National Marine Park, and sea turtles are regular company.
- Klein Bonaire cruise-friendly snorkel sail: a catamaran trip of about 4 hours with two guided drift snorkels, timed for cruise schedules.
- Shared sail and snorkel tour: about 4 hours under sail in a small group, with snorkel stops along the coast and at Klein Bonaire.
- Two-stop snorkel tour by speedboat: about 3 hours, a good fit for shorter calls.
- Glass-bottom reef tour: one hour, and you stay dry. Ideal with young children or if you would rather look than swim.
If you want to see the island
Bonaire is small, but it changes fast: pink salt pans, flamingos and the old slave huts in the south, cactus hills and the village of Rincon in the north. A north and south tour with a local guide covers both in about 3 hours, which leaves you the afternoon.
For something you will not find on other islands, the cave exploring tour takes you underground into Bonaire's limestone caves.
One thing to skip on a short call: Washington Slagbaai National Park. It is beautiful, but the rough roads make it a full-day trip. Save it for when you come back for a week.
If you want calm water and no crowds
On the east side, the mangroves of Lac Bay are a different world from the cruise pier. The clear-bottom mangrove kayak and snorkel tour takes about 3 hours and paddles through channels you cannot reach any other way. Allow for the drive across the island when you check your timing.
If you are a certified diver
Bonaire is famous for shore diving, and you can do it on a port day. Two operators run packages built for cruise passengers, with gear, transport and a guide included: the cruise ship package and the cruise ship special, the second with a maximum of four divers per guide.
What you can do on foot
You do not need a tour to enjoy Kralendijk. Within a few minutes of the pier you will find the waterfront promenade, the small yellow Fort Oranje, the shopping street Kaya Grandi and plenty of terraces for lunch with a sea view. An hour is enough to see it; two if you stop to eat.
Ship excursion or local operator?
The excursions sold on board are convenient, and the ship waits for them. Booking direct with a local operator usually means a smaller group and a lower price, and the money stays on the island. The fair question is: what if I am late?
Tours for cruise guests on this site are timed to your ship's hours in port, and you get a full refund if your ship cancels or skips Bonaire. Still, keep your own buffer. Book a morning departure where you can, and be back in town at least an hour before all-aboard.
Practical notes
- Money: the US dollar is the official currency. Cards are widely accepted; carry some cash for small purchases.
- Sunscreen: Bonaire bans sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate to protect the reef. Bring a mineral sunscreen or wear a rash guard.
- Marine park: ask your operator whether the nature fee for the marine park is included in your tour.
- Busy days: when two ships are in port, tours fill up early. The schedule shows how many ships share your date.
